It has to be said, “winter is coming”.

The air outside is crisp, cold and at times punishing.  Indoors, the heaters go on, and that air becomes dry,  brittle and irritating.

This constant fluctuation between bitter cold and synthetic heat can wreak havoc on our skin.

It’s probably the most difficult time of the year for our dermis.

Skin can become very dry (which can actually send oily skins into oil production overdrive, while still feeling tight and dehydrated), itchy, irritated, sensitive, and speeds up premature aging and acne production.

Winter is a stress on our skin.  Sometimes we can even break out in psoriasis or eczema.

It’s enough to make the best of us hibernate for  the winter – avoid social situations, use filters on our selfies or hide from the camera all together.

We have put some together some ways you can avoid this dreadful seasonal change on your skin

Keep your house and car  as cool as you can handle

Synthetic heat is extremely drying.  It literally sucks the moisturize right out of us.  The drastic fluctuations from hot to cold can also cause sensitivity and irritation in our skin.   To stay warm wear sweaters and have natural fiber blankets ready.

Try to avoid blasting hot oil directly onto your face in  the car.

Avoid hot water

I love a hot shower, but in the winter I try my best to keep the temperature moderate. We want to avoid drastic temperature changes and not dry our skin out even further.  This is good to note for hand washing as well.  You don’t need scalding hot water to wash your hands!  Hot showers can increase sensitivity as well.

Use a toner throughout the day

A wonderful  way  to reintroduce water into the skin throughout the day is to have a toner on hand.  You can buy small glass spray bottles at zero waste  or eco-stores.   Put some toner into the smaller bottle from your large one.  In the winter we highly recommend Eminence Organics Stone Crop Toner.  Keep toner in your purse and spritz your face as much  as you  wish! I  have one by my kitchen sink even.  And it’s a must to have one on your desk.   Toners are deeply hydrating. And if you didn’t get it by now – all winter long we need to keep our skin hydrated!!

Switch from a mechanical exfoliation to a peel – and do it less

Manualy scrubbing the skin can be irritatiing and over-stipping in the winter.  We also want to exfoliate a lot less,1-2 times a week max.  Our winter favourite for home care is the Calm Skin Peel.  For your professional treatments you want to do the Arctic Berry Peels one or twice a month.    Our December facial special, Northern Lights Includes a free arctic berry skin refining peel!  We will peel your skin the perfect amount to keep it smooth, hydrated and balanced.

Introduce masking  – or do it more!

Make masking a regular part of your weekly skin care ritual.  2-3 times a week you want to mask with a  potent, antioxidant, super hydrating, yet soothing mask.    The Reishi Snow Mushroom mask does just all of that!  I love to wash my face and apply a mask so it sinks in while I watch my nightly show.

Protect your skin outdoors

Before braving the elements make sure you apply a thicker moisturizer or balm  – especially if you are spending extended amounts of time out there! Balms will protect your skin from harsh winds, reduce irritation and possible eczema breakouts.  They  also provide sun protection and add much needed moisture to the skin instead of allowing it to dry out.   The Rosehip Lemongrass  Balm is hands down the best Eminence barrier cream ever made!
