Do you live in fear of silence?
When was the last time you just sat still and made no noise?
If you practice yoga or are familiar with Mouna Vratham, a ritual of meditative silence in Indian Hindu tradition, this may not be a new concept for you.
We are inundated with distractions and responsibilities.
This constant stimulation can lead to burn-out. Which is at an all time high now thanks to the pandemic and government mandated lock downs.
Many of us are feeling frustrated and angst. And an inability to escape, unwind and just BE.
Did you think that finding 5-10 minute of silence a day could be helpful? Have you ever tried to practice silence when moving about in the world?
You do not need a meditation room, waterfall or fancy retreat. You can practice silence literally anywhere you are.
This January Wild Flower spa is practicing silence and we encourage you to be silent while in the spa.
This is a special time for you to focus on your self care and wellbeing. Instead of chattering away, let’s try to be still.
A neat tool to calm the mind is what I ca11 5,4,3,2,1. It goes like this:
*Take a deep breath
*Pick out five things you can see
*Close your eyes and take another deep breath.
*Find four things you can hear
*Now focus on your body and notice three things you can feel
*Bring your senses inward and notice two things you can hear
*Now, think of one thing you can taste.
See how long you can stay still and silent after this practice. Has anything changed in your awareness? Your heart rate? This is awesome if you have anxiety too!
Improves focus – It’s almost impossible for our minds to multitask. Actually, I think it’s impossible! When there are many distractions around us our brain literally flips and flops between every single thing – this is why burnout happens!! By not contributing to the noise and staying in silence when there is chaos around us we can better focus on what we actually need to, instead of working our brains out to the point of exhaustion.
Better decision making – When practicing silence you can calmly think about how your day is going to look and how you may want to respond when others trigger you. It allows for less stress and flight or fight response which means you can make better, more clear decisions.
Brings you more success in the workplace/as a leader – This is a great article by Forbes as to how silence is practiced by leaders and how it can make you one too!
Builds creativity – Once you get used to being silent, it’s kinda fun. Your brain starts to daydream and wander. It’s lovely to reminisce or have funny thoughts. You may also come up with creative ideas!
Improves your health – According to Marc S. Lener, MD silence can possibly, lower blood pressure, stimulating brain growth, reducing cortisol (stress), and improve insomnia
If you would like to give practising silence a try in a safe and comfortable environment, consider coming to the spa. It doesn’t have to be in January. ANY time you want to practice silence let your spa therapist know and she will honour your request – in fact, we love it! When you are silent it allows us to fully concentrate on your service!
